I'd definitely like to do slalom this year. What's the word on using Leazes Park lake? Wouldnt they just argue that we'd be harassing the ducks/swans(?)?

there is lots of barbed wire under the surface of leazes lake so i wouldn't want to be the one who swims !

Re: BUCS Slalom

Hello,
How is everyone feeling today, i hope everyone had fun at the meal and bamboo last night, sorry i didnt make it, i had an opportunity to dress as a sheep so it couldn't be missed unfortunately! I still managed to get some gossip tho, tempted to mention names but I'll restrain myself.
Anyway, to business, bucs slalom! The entries are now almost final and can be seen below along with the points system. It looks like this trip is going to be huuuge, the biggest this year maybe?? There are 51 people coming which im sure is almost all of the club! My deepest sympathies to those that can't make it btw.
The only thing that i possibly need is volunteers, at the moment we only have one entry into the C1 event and because of the way that the points are calculated we ideally need more! It will unfortunately mean not being able to race in the k1 event though!

I am going to volunteer my self and i think ian has too. Just incase anyone doesn't know, c1 can be a bit tricky and often very wet and inverted and as the people that do it will need to get to the bottom with out getting out the boat this is only really open to people that have had a go before and are reasonably competent. If anyone wants to have a go to see what its like then im sure we could get a c1 to the pool sometime for you all to have a go!

Sorry for a bit of a rambling email, if everyone can have a look at the entries to see what they're doing that would be great, they are still open to change if needed so don't panic if you want to be in different teams etc.
One last thing, I'm going to be up here until sometime next week so if anyone want to do any training/ general paddling let me know!

The BUCS points for the Slalom are worked out in the same way as the
River Race for the individual categories:

1st 12
2nd 8
3rd 6
4th 4

And for the team categories:

1st 20
2nd 14
3rd 10
4th 7
5th 5
6th 3
7th 2
8th 1

The only difference is that for the Slalom there are also points awarded
for overall university on the same scale as for team events above.

The way the Overall University points are worked out is as follows:

Points from 100 to 0 are awarded for all competitors who start the race,
however those who don't finish all receive 0 points. For example, 10
people start and only 8 finish, they are awarded points as follows:

1st 100
2nd 90
3rd 80
4th 70
5th 60
6th 40
7th 30
8th 20
=9th 0 (DNF)
=9th 0 (DNF)

These scores are doubled for team categories.

The 5 highest points scoring individuals all contribute their full
points to their overall university score. In addition the 2 highest
scoring teams contribute their full points. All other competitors and
team contribute the points of the last placed finisher in that class. So
in the case of the class above that would be 20 points.

The total score is used to calculate the overall university positions.

Hi folks,

Which accomodation are you folks planning on staying at or does anyone have any recommendations for accomodation as my brother with his team at UWE are coming up and need somewhere for the 10 of them to stay?

Think they are coming up onthe Thursday and are hoping to go for a days paddle on the Friday (high - low or Barny - Winston).

Cheers

Hey Ralph, since slalom is going to creap up pretty fast, it may be worth trying to get down to teeside one of the first 2 weekends back. (before scotland)

sorry Pete, not sure about accommodation. Maybe msg Ralph or Mark.

Happy New Year to everyone.

Hello, sorry for the very late reply on this one, we are staying at a luxurious metro inn, same place as last year i think! We are only there on the saturday night though as there isnt space for the whole 51 of us on the Friday.
Give them a ring though and see what they say. +44(0) 1642 606 560

The course is open this weekend 8-12sat 8-1sun. I can't do this weekend as im busy, next weekend its open 11-5 12-5.30, this would be better for me as we could just go down in the afternoon.
We still need to get there though, if im going i can drive a bus/van which will need hiring. If people with cars can come that will be very helpful.
Can anyone wanting to go put there name on here along with when they can make it.
Thank you!
